Abdominoplasty explained
Abdominoplasty is a procedure where a sizeable portion of skin and the underlying fat layer from the lower abdomen is removed and sutured back together. Usually the umbilicus (tummy button) needs to be repositioned as well.

Before the Procedure
The abdominoplasty can be an effective procedure at least 12 to 18 months after weight loss surgery. The surgery should be done near the time that the weight loss levels off to avoid having more excess skin months after the procedure. It is essential to stop smoking months before this procedure to allow good wound healing.
The doctor will help evaluate the chances that the skin is elastic enough to recede to a smaller size. Younger people tend to have more elastic skin and many may not need surgery. If a hernia develops during weight loss, the doctor may recommend the abdominoplasty in combination with the hernia repair surgery.

After the Procedure
It is a procedure that requires usually 2-3 nights in hospital and a few weeks of recovery post operatively. Patients would go home with drains in place for 1 to 2 weeks and would be seen fairly regularly in the clinic as an outpatient. Some complications can occur and would include wound infections, collections of fluid beneath the scar, and the small possibility of losing the skin in the tummy button region.
