Bariatric Surgery Types?

A common procedure is a Sleeve Gastrectomy or a Gastric Sleeve. The surgery is a weight loss procedure that involves stapling off the stomach, and removing a portion of it.

A Gastric Bypass surgery reduces the stomach to a narrow pouch, and joins a short segment of the bowel to the new stomach to form the bypass.

Gastric Band surgery is a procedure that involves a silicon band wrapped around the top part of the stomach so only a small fraction of food can be contained in the stomach. A number of patients who have previously had a gastric band or adjustable gastric band are now facing weight gain, poor quality eating or reflux and it is becoming increasingly common to need to remove these gastric band. It may be possible to before perform a sleeve gastrectomy at a later date.

Am I a bariatric surgery candidate?

If you have a BMI of 35 or above you are probably going to be a pretty good candidate for looking at bariatric surgery to reduce your risks for the future and hopefully have an increased quality of life. We also know from long term studies that many patients with a high BMI who have weight loss surgery will life longer . BMI is fairly simple to work out and we have a tool for this on our website. ( it is weight in Kgs divided by your height in metres squared).

Having said that BMI is not always the best tool for looking at risks for the future. A male rugby player may have a BMI of 40 because he has a heap of muscle and he certainly doesn’t need a weight loss procedure.

We sometimes use our very accurate DEXA scanner to look at body composition. We can see to the gram how much fat a patient has and how much muscle and where it all is. If you are carrying a lot of central visceral fat around the inner organs then even with a BMI of 30 + you may have extra risks for the future and be a reasonable candidate for looking at bariatric surgery. If you are interested in assessing your risks for the future and would like to have a DEXA scan we can organise this for you.

If you want to find out if you are a bariatric surgery candidate, please fill out our short questionnaire.
