Dr Jon Armstrong has recently been involved in demonstrating the use of the Olympus Thunderbeat Device, with a video being made during one of his Sleeve Gastrectomy operations.
The video shows how he is currently performing a sleeve gastrectomy using this device. It is an energy device which uses a combination of high intensity ultrasound to melt through and seal the tissues with minimal bleeding. The device also incorporates a traditional bipolar diathermy at the tip to cauterise any vessels that do bleed. Blood vessels up to 7mm can be divided with this device so no clips or suturing required.
