Procedure to Remove Gastric Band

About 20% of our patients considering sleeve gastrectomy, have had laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery, and are now facing weight gain, reflux or poor quality eating.

Before performing a sleeve gastrectomy, stomach sutures and the gastric band are removed through tiny incisions. Often the stomach is left to settle down for a few months before it is safe to come back and perform a subsequent sleeve gastrectomy.

Reasons to Remove Gastric Band

The main reasons for removing a gastric band are band slippage, erosion, infection, discomfort (i.e. nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing or pain after eating) or undesirable weight loss results. The gastric band is a long-term implant that needs to be removed before a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. Candidates for sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass typically wait 2-3 months for the inflammation to go down after removal of the gastric band.

Preparation to surgically remove a gastric band is similar to any surgical procedure. In consult with your surgeon, manage your medications to avoid complications (especially with blood thinners). Hydrate and stay rested. As with any surgery, gastric band removal has potential complications and risks to discuss with your doctor.

If your gastric band was implanted laparoscopically it can also usually be removed laparoscopically. The procedure can sometimes be difficult and last several hours. If gastric band removal surgery is performed laparoscopically, patients typically spend 24 hours in the hospital. It takes most patients about a week to return to work and a few weeks to resume exercising.
