About Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
A Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a surgical procedure for weight loss. It has been used since the 1960s.
It is a very common surgical procedure for weight loss in North America particularly. It is usually performed laparoscopically (keyhole). It involves making a small stomach and then making a join to your small bowel. A section of your small bowel is excluded (the bypass) so that not all the food you consume is absorbed and therefore you lose weight.
In the Roux-en-Y procedure, an extra limb of small bowel is hooked up to the stomach to stop bile refluxing up there. It is called a Y because it looks like that (see diagram below). Roux-en-Y bypass is good for people who have reflux to start with, as it can make reflux better.

When is a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Used?
Gastric bypass surgery has been used as a common weight loss procedure for more than 40 years. In Australia, and also at Advance Surgical in Perth, it has become a more popular choice in recent years, particularly for patients with diabetes.
Your GP and your Bariatric Surgeon will determine if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery. Weight loss or bariatric surgery is known to significantly reduce other adverse health effects of obesity, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and diabetes type 2.

How Does a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Work?
The procedure is performed through keyhole surgery (Laparoscopy) and takes place under general anaesthesia. Your Surgeon will use the keyhole surgery instruments to staple the top of the stomach so it forms a small pouch: your new, smaller stomach separated from the rest of the stomach. The pouch is then joined to the small intestine, bypassing the first part of the intestine. A Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery generally takes 2-3 hours.
