Hernia surgery involves placing the intestine back inside the abdomen wall and reinforcing the abdomen wall or groin area (inguinal). Many inguinal hernias can be repaired using a laparoscopic procedure – especially when a hernia is smaller. Laparoscopic or open repair utilises a mesh for reinforcement and there is a low recurrence rate.

Treatment of the Condition
Hernia surgery may be needed when a portion of the abdominal contents is pushing through a weak spot in the groin area or stomach muscles. An inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia. It occurs near the groin in men more than women due to a slightly larger canal between the testicles and internal body. Women can also get hernias in the abdomen, but groin hernias are less common due to their physiology.

Before Hernia Surgery
The symptoms of an inguinal hernia include pain around the groin and discomfort when bending, lifting or coughing. Some people describe no pain or only slight pressure around the area of a hernia. Often the intestine forming the hernia will be a soft bulge that may only appear when standing or sitting for long periods of time.It is generally a good idea to repair a hernia surgically sooner rather than later before it gets bigger. Small hernias are easier to fix than large ones.

After the Procedure
The benefits of Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Surgery are a quick recovery time:
- Three small incisions are less invasive than a large incision
- Less scarring because less tissue is cut to access the hernia repair area
- Short hospital stay – as short as leaving the same day or one day after surgery
- Less pain than the open hernia surgery and recovering from a long incision
The faster recovery means resuming daily life and returning to work in a few days instead of several weeks.
