What is a hernia

It is defined as a bulging of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening. The types of hernias Advance Surgical treats include:

  • Hiatus hernias: a defect in the diaphragm around the oesophagus. This causes the stomach to bulge up into the chest. The result can be reflux or food getting stuck on the way down.
  • Umbilical hernias: a defect or weakness around the belly-button. This can causes the abdominal contents to bulge out. It can be unsightly or painful and usually needs to be fixed surgically.
  • Inguinal hernias: there is a weak area in the groin and often the abdominal contents can bulge out. They are often painful and need to be fixed surgically. Sometimes they can be fixed with keyhole surgery.

What Are the Causes?

Sedentary people and obese people are more likely to get a hernia. A hernia can occur in both men and women when a large strain is put on the intestinal wall, such as when lifting a heavy object.

The most common causes are poor strength in abdominal and back muscles compounded by improper lifting techniques and lifting objects that are too heavy. Weak stomach muscles allow the intestines to push through and get trapped in the gap in the muscles.

  • Pain when coughing, especially with a hernia located in the groin
