Are you a Gastric Sleeve Candidate?
Gastric sleeve surgery (also called a stomach sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy) is very effective for weight loss if your body mass index (BMI) is over 35. In Perth, Advance Surgical performs gastric sleeve operations safely and routinely, and with a gastric sleeve most patients will experience improved or resolution of their comorbidities: Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnoea in particular. Post-surgery patients face few dietary restrictions.
Suitable candidates for a sleeve gastrectomy surgery
Suitable gastric sleeve candidates are patients who:
- Have a BMI over 35 ( or possibly lower with diabetes )
- Are aged between 18 and 70
Suffer from obesity related comorbidities - Do not have any other health problem causing excessive weight gain
- Are committed to moderate their alcohol intake and to make other lifestyle changes
A gastric sleeve operation is not suitable for patients who only wish to lose a minimal amount of weight or change their body contours. It’s important to realise that weight loss surgery is a major undertaking to help patients suffering from obesity.

What exactly is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is a keyhole procedure and its main purpose is weight loss. The laparoscopic surgical procedure involves stapling off and removing a significant part of the stomach. What is left is a small tube, with a capacity of approximately 250ml. A gastric sleeve operation takes 1-2 hours and as a patient you usually stay in hospital for 3 nights. Sleeve gastrectomy patients are then able to return to work in 2 weeks after surgery.

After a Gastric Sleeve Operation
As said the diet and exercise regimen after your surgery require commitment. After the gastric sleeve surgery patients would achieve a 65% reduction in their excess weight over a year.
Their appetite and average portion size is generally reduced significantly. Many comorbidities, such as Sleep Apnoea, Hypertension or Type 2 Diabetes would be expected to disappear or get better.
