Gastric Band Surgery
Gastric Band Surgery vs Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric Band or Gastric Sleeve?
As you research and compare the various types of weight loss surgery, you will find that both gastric band surgery and gastric sleeve surgery are common procedures. The worldwide numbers are changing rapidly though. Gastric band surgery is becoming much less common and sleeve gastrectomy is now the most common bariatric surgical procedure. At Advance Surgical Perth we offer mainly gastric sleeve procedures and gastric bypass. If you have had a gastric band before, your journey may include the surgical removal of your existing gastric band.
As part of your initial consultations, your Surgeon will inform you about the differences, and will help you determine which surgery option may be suitable for you.

About Gastric Band Procedures
A gastric band surgery and a sleeve gastrectomy both involve a modification to the stomach, so it holds smaller amounts of food. The procedures take a different approach. The gastric band creates a pouch, when it wraps around the stomach.
In this pouch, only a small fraction of the food can be contained compared to the size of the entire stomach. The band is inflated or deflated through the injection of a saline solution and there is no cutting or stapling of the stomach.
With the progress in bariatric surgery, the use of gastric band surgeries is on a steady decline. In the last decade, the percentage of gastric band surgeries dropped from 70 % to 5% of the total numbers of bariatric procedures in Australia.
Sleeve gastrectomy procedures and gastric bypass surgeries have now taken over as the most commonly performed operation techniques, mainly because of improved and more sustainable weight loss outcomes.
Gastric Sleeve as an Alternative to Gastric Banding
Obesity surgery through a sleeve gastrectomy or a gastric sleeve procedure is a common and widely used alternative to gastric band surgery nowadays. When your Surgeon removes a large part of the stomach, the remaining part forms a sleeve or tube. Although it is a more invasive surgery type compared to gastric band surgery, it generally provides superior weight loss in the subsequent years after surgery.
Because of the superior outcomes obtained with gastric sleeve surgery, at Advance Surgical Perth, we would very rarely offer gastric band surgeries and mainly perform sleeve gastrectomies and gastric bypass surgeries.
What if I have had a Gastric Band Before?
About 20% of our Perth patients who consider a sleeve gastrectomy have a gastric band in place. Quite often these patients would be experiencing weight gain, poor quality eating or reflux. In this case, we remove the gastric band through tiny incisions before performing a gastric sleeve surgery on a separate occasion.
