Counting the cost of obesity: private health insurance and bariatric surgery

When it comes to dealing with a serious weight problem, patients might struggle to balance their health needs against the financial costs of weight loss surgery. So, it’s helpful to know that for patients who are struggling with obesity, bariatric surgery and private health insurance generally do go together. But it’s also important to consider the overall health and financial benefits of weight loss surgery. These include less money spent on medications for comorbidities, less time off work due to ill health, and better mental well-being.

Do you need private health insurance for bariatric surgery?

We recommend that bariatric patients have private health insurance before going down the path of weight-loss surgery. Uninsured patients are also able to access bariatric surgery. But it’s important to let us know when you call whether you have private insurance for bariatric surgery or not. If you aren’t sure if your insurer covers you or to what extent, it’s best to call them first to find out what rebates you may be eligible for.

While private health insurance for bariatric surgery is preferable, our surgeons are aware that uninsured patients would also like the opportunity to have bariatric surgery. Fees for our procedures are given up-font and all hospital costs can be obtained prior to surgery.

Are there options if you don’t have private insurance for bariatric surgery?

If you either don’t have private cover or your private insurance doesn’t extend to bariatric surgery, there are payment options. Advance Surgical is registered with a service called zipMoney, which can lessen the upfront financial burden of your surgery. Through zipMoney, you can apply for a loan for your weight-loss surgery and pay it off over a period of six months. So, while private insurance for bariatric surgery is preferable, you’re not without options if you don’t have the cover.
