A gastric band surgery and a sleeve gastrectomy both involve a modification to the stomach, so it holds smaller amounts of food. The procedures take a different approach. The gastric band creates a pouch, when it wraps around the stomach.
In this pouch, only a small fraction of the food can be contained compared to the size of the entire stomach. The band is inflated or deflated through the injection of a saline solution and there is no cutting or stapling of the stomach.
