DEXA Body Composition Scan
DEXA Body Composition Scan bookings are available at Advance Surgical. A DEXA Body Composition Scan looks at the whole body, using low-level X-Rays to work out the exact makeup of bone, muscle and fat in your body.
DEXA Body Composition Scan in brief
You will lie on your back for about 10 minutes on a comfortable table whilst your body is scanned. A computer software application assists in determining the amount of bone, lean muscle and fat tissues across the whole body and in specific regions. The software compiles a body composition report with information on composition of the torso, arms, and legs.

Before the Procedure
Why look at body composition? The traditional weigh-in or Body Mass Index measurements are pretty inaccurate. A doctor may find monitoring weight gain and weight loss can be roughly useful whilst treating a condition. Unfortunately, weight or skinfold tests cannot give a complete picture of the body’s make up.
Modern technology has made it possible to safely “see inside” a person’s body. A DEXA body composition scan can be a useful tool when diagnosing and treating:
- Obesity and weight management
- Body fitness ( as the scanner can calculate your metabolic rate)
- Osteoporosis ( the scanner will calculate your bone density)
After the Procedure
How does body composition work? During the DEXA body composition scan, the bone densitometer uses tiny amounts of X-rays which are very safe.. Bone, fat, and lean muscle absorb these X-Rays differently and the computer software uses this data to measure the inside of the body.
A DEXA body composition scan allows you to see exactly where you are before weight loss surgery and then allows you to monitor your progress as you lose weight. Your DEXA body composition scan can answer questions like:
- Are you losing or gaining muscle?
- Is there a reduction in the central/visceral fat?
It also allows you to see your bone density and calculate your lean muscle mass and metabolic rate. These differences in X-Ray absorption are used to determine bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition values.
DEXA Body Composition Scan as You Get Fit
DEXA is also great for athletes and people getting fit. It allows a person to see where they are now and what progress they are making. For this reason, the DEXA scan can be used for sports performance to measure athletic development.
